Normally a $170 Training, Great Basin College is able to offer the Mental Health FIrst Aid (MHFA) training FREE to 澳门新甫京娱乐游戏在线下载 students and employees, 18+ years old, through the generous support of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Grant for the NSHE Mental Health Services Pilot Project.

澳门新甫京娱乐游戏在线下载 is offering 17 different training dates to choose from. Each training consists of 2-hours of self paced content followed by 5.5 hours of synchronous instructor-led training on ZOOM with 澳门新甫京娱乐游戏在线下载’s own Human Services Professor Oscar Sida and Dr. Gerardo Wence-Munoz.

Defining BIT

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at Great Basin College is a multifunctional team made up of faculty and staff with experience working in counseling, disability resources, student success, student activities and services, student discipline and college police/public safety. The team meets monthly to coordinate responses to student behaviors of concern received from students, faculty and staff. When a concern is raised about specific student behaviors, BIT follows up on these concerns.

The BIT system is not an emergency response team. When an emergency occurs, call the Security Cell at 775-934-4923 for immediate response.

What We Do

The mission of the Great Basin College (澳门新甫京娱乐游戏在线下载) Behavioral Intervention Team is to provide the broadest base of knowledge and skills designed to help students, faculty, and staff during difficult times. The BIT shares general information regarding resources available and provides for ongoing training to ensure the availability of assistance to those in crisis, regardless of the nature of the situation. The team has protocols in place to ensure open communication between departments while maintaining the confidentiality necessary to respond quickly in a crisis.

Reporting

You play a role in the campus safety and our college culture encourages reporting of behavior that makes you uncomfortable, whether you overhear a conversation or see activities of concern on campus or in the classroom.

Any member of the Great Basin College community is encouraged to report disturbing or concerning behavior exhibited by students, including, but not limited to:

• Behavior or language that is threatening to the student and/or others
• Sudden change in appearance or behavior
• Disturbing writings, emails, comments
• Disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, obstruction of teaching
• Signs of behavior and/or visible signs of suicide or attempted suicide

BIT does not focus on classroom management issues, such as …

• Disruption of learning environment
• Rude, disrespectfulness toward students or instructor
• Failure to follow instructions or submit assignments

BIT analyzes all available information using objective rubrics, tools and assessments. Then, based on the level of risk resulting from the assessment process, a course of action is determined.

During the process, BIT continually balances the needs and rights of the student of concern with the safety and security of the larger college community. The team also educates the community about existing tools and proper responses to any behavioral issues of concern.

Environmental Health and Safety

Campus Security

The Department encourages all faculty, staff and students to be active in helping to keep the Great Basin College centers safe places for all. Be aware of your surroundings, use common sense precautions for your personal safety, lock your vehicle when parking and when possible, at night walk with friends. If you observe any suspicious or unusual activity please contact Security or the Campus Director so the situation can be investigated. If you see suspected criminal activities report it immediately. The department is responsible for providing security on the Great Basin College Elko campus during normal class hours and may be contacted at 775-934-4923.

Departmental Training

The Security Department as a member of the University of Nevada, Reno Northern Command follows a continuous training program of in-person and online training. All staff are assigned yearly training courses they must successfully complete, through the PoliceOne Academy training program. PoliceOne Academy is a Nevada P.O.S.T. certified training program.

The Director of Environmental Health, Safety & Security has received additional training, certification and membership from the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA), most recently receiving Certification from NaBITA in Advanced Violence Risk Assessment and their SIVRA-35 assessment question program. Training, certification and membership has also been achieved with the Association of Title IX Administrators (atIXa). The Director has received certification at the level of Civil Rights Investigator Level Four, Title IX Compliance and Athletics and Title IX Hearing Officer & Decision-Maker.

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in federally-assisted programs. Grievance procedures are clearly defined and available to all students and employees. In keeping with the policy of Great Basin College against unlawful discrimination all inquiries and complaints of alleged discrimination should be directed to the following Title IX Coordinator (Primary Officer).

Great Basin College (President’s Council) has adopted the Nevada System of Higher Education Title IX Task Force revisions to the NSHE policy. This policy was approved by the Board of Regents at the June 2017 meeting.
